Golden Demon 2014 Diaroma

Diarima category is just as imaginative as the Duel category. In many respect’s the Duel’s big brother. Sometimes leaving the adversaries up to your imagination. This first picture below leaves nothing but the size of the Tyranid Hoard up for debate.

Chapterhouse Studios Open for Business

The Chapterhouse Studios web site has reopened. From the products available for sale, it appears the original court judgement is being upheld. For example the Dark Elf and power glove are still not available.

Chapter house Dark Eldar – No longer available.

The good news is many of their other products are still there. If it wasn’t for the withdrawal of the court appeals you would be forgiven for thinking Chapterhouse Studios paid their fine and have just started trading again. What has changed on the Chapterhouse site is the use of Games Workshop trademarks. Phrases such as “compatible with” and “designed for” Space Marines are still being used. This legal cases outcome has certainly opened the way for other companies to make products for Warhammer and to use the Games Workshop trademarks in the marketing of their products.

In related news Games Workshop appear to have forced some of the Chinese remoulding business to stop advertising on some of the better know auction and shopping sites. I would imagine these remoulding business are having a much worse impact on Games Workshop’s bottom line than Chapterhouse Studios were. If someone wants a landraider they have to buy it from Games Workshop or get a remould. They can’t buy it from Chapterhouse Studios. It appears Games Workshop have learnt some important lessons from the Chapterhouse Law Suit and are now bring them to bear on those who are clearly breaking Trademark Law rather then those who might be. The question remains of wether Games Workshop are able to close down the Chinese counterfeiters faster than new ones open.

We probably all know the problem with counterfeiters, they can produce inferior versions of a product and do cost the intellectual property owner money, this can result in fewer new products and jobs at Games Workshop. The benefit of counterfeiter is they open up products to those who might not otherwise be able to afford them. They also force the intellectual property owner to consider their pricing strategy at bit more closely. Given the current barrier to entry in the 40k hobby, could this be a good thing?

All in all this may have been a good day for 40k. And to paraphrase the outgoing CEO, if you ignore the numbers it’s been a good day for Games Workshop.

Golden Demon 2014 – 40k Single Miniature

Here are all of the 40k Single Miniature entries I was able to get pictures of. As I’ve already stated the standard was amazing this year.  While I had improved my own Golden Demon entry I could completely understand why it didn’t make the finals, maybe next year. There is a lot on the model I wasn’t happy with. I was glad non of the Krom Dragongaze mini’s won (Never enter your 1st idea). Most of the models below didn’t even make the finals.

Apart from it being a bit crowded getting to the cabinets the atmosphere was far nicer this year. In fact I think this was the most enjoyable and cheapest Golden Demon I can remember. There was no freebies for entering and only a certificate for making the finals this year. I guess that will keep out the rubbish next year.  It was noticeable some of the better painters had not entered this year although other’s had come from across Europe. Last years winner managed 3rd and I didn’t see Painting Buddha either, although the evidence of his DVDs and you tube videos was everywhere. Some of the old crowd that had turned up, looked a little disappointed the community hadn’t turned out in force. I think there were around 300 tickets remaining.  Living fairly locally, I’m not sure if the location was a big put off for many this year. The venue was far nicer, Here’s hoping for the the ICC next year (just wishful thinking, nothing more.)

Necrons attack

Necrons attack

Necrons attack

This Necron army from armies on parade at Games day 2013 seems to be fighting among themselves for some reason, perhaps it’s because they are confused at the colour of their gauss blasters with the Death marks preferring blue compared to the green of the rest of the army.

attack of the necrons

Death mark

I really liked the inclusion of a very old relic those of you that remember Warhammer 40,000 second edition will remember that the Orks had access to imperial weapon’s the plasma pistol seen above was one of such weapons that came with some of the Ork models.

wraith attack

In the bottom right hand corner of the board are some warriors that have crawled through the sewer to get inside the ruins after a Canoptek Wraith had burst its way through. their poses would almost make me feel like their metal skeletons could actually feel the cold as they appear to be shivering. it is however a good use of excess parts from the ghost/doomsday ark kit. as he has set his up as a dooms day ark as seen below.

Ghost ark

Dooms day Ark

scarab bases

I also like how the scarabs have been based, also the excellent use of terrain used acros the board with the imperial cities ruins kit been used the Sky shield landing pad and also a gun emplacement base. Well done to who ever put this army together.

Necron Defence Line from Chapter House Studios

Chapter House Studios have joined the ranks of third party manufactures putting out alternative defence lines for Warhammer 40,000 armies.

Their Necron, sorry I mean Space Undead Defence line comes with a choice of weapons or comms really and is available with green or blue plastic glass components.

The appearance of this kit is a significantly step forward for Chapter House, although it clearly theses haven’t had the same amount of development and tooling that Games Workshop kits have. There is a distinct yet not outright copycat Necron look to it. These won’t look out of place on a game board.

20140422-230110.jpg

It’s good to see Chapter House isn’t dead. Their product release rate appears to have slowed down significantly since the legal battle with Games Workshop started.

Some people must think it rather odd Games Workshop haven’t already released their own alternative defence lines. It was only a matter of time before other manufactures started selling these. I can only assume the sales projections favour new products over alternatives.
