The end of Games Day, Golden Demon, White Dwarf and Games Workshop for Ben

I’m sorry to say Games Workshop have totally killed my motivation for their products with 7th Edition. I have had a look through the rule books and can’t justify spending that much money for something which is so obviously worth less than half the price in terms of original content.

Given this latest money grab from Games Workshop, selling what I perceive as a highly recycled over weight product with little in the way of real substance. I’m tempted to join my friends in playing less pricey alternative systems. Seventh edition appears to be a similar profit focused move to the other changes GW have been making with Games Day and White dwarf. I feel like they have been losing market share in Fantasy and Lord of the Rings, so are trying to make up for it by upping the cost of the one system that continues to sell well. Unless they release an FaQ for 6th edition. I think my gaming group has played it’s last game. I imagine I will carry on painting one off models, but as it appears there is no Golden Demon this year, my motivation for painting is at an all time low.

I have arranged a game of 6th edition next weekend which I intend to play, but beyond that I’m not sure I’ll be gaming anymore. Suffice to say if I’m not gaming and painting I won’t have much to contribute to this blog. Hopefully Gareth will still put up the occasional post.

I have given up 40k in the past, when 3rd edition was retired and after 3 years of came back to the hobby. So this may not be forever, however for now, this is the end of Games Workshop for me.

Thanks for reading this blog. I hope I will have something positive to say about Games Workshop at some point. But until then. Live long and prosper.

Should You Buy 40k 7th Edition?

7th edition hits
Yesterday copies of 7th edition were being opened and people were realising the internet had again disappointed gamers, by putting out false rumours. It appears the words credible are not well understood by certain websites. I’m looking at the big well known sites here.

Is it really a new edition?
In terms of rules changes the 7th edition set is an update to 6th edition, not a new version of 40k. It’s more like a big FAQ has been inserted in the old rule book. If you want a really good overview of the changes Talk Talk have posted a lengthy article. 40k 7th Edition Rules Changes TalkTalk Wargamming

There is still nothing from GW in terms of an PDF update to bring 6th edition books in line. There has also been no news on Golden Demon or Games Day 2014.

What’s Good About The New Book
The value in 7th edition comes from the expansion on the way you can choose an army, the expanded missions, mission cards and expanded psychic system. Did you notice I said expanded? Yep that’s what I see this box as, an expansion like apocalypse. Veterans who remember Dark millennium will see a lot of similarities. They will probably be worrying this will destroy 40k with a cumbersome and over powered psychic system. I don’t believe it will though.

The “other” books
There two other books included in the box are interesting. One really is a big Warhammer 40k visions with big blown up pictures, for those of us who can’t see the amazing detail the heavy metal team have painted into the models. The other book is full of background and art which looks very familiar. After 6 other sets of 40k background, I find it very hard to read the same thing reworded, again and again. Resulting in missing what has actually changed.

Summary
It’s good value, it will add a new dimension to games, it’s not a new version of 40k, it’s not an essential purchase unless the other gamers you play with are going to use it. I know lots of gamers who are waiting for the new box set or rules only version before taking the leap on this one.

Blood Angel Contemptor From Golden Demon 2013

contemplator 1

This Blood angel Contemptor Dreadnought was entered into Games day 2013 Golden demon, in the Warhammer 40,000 vehicle category. The Dreadnought has been armed with two twin linked auto cannon. Behind the Blood Angel Dreadnought is a World Eaters Dreadnought, which has been armed with two power fists for brutal close range assault.
At the time of writing this post Games workshop have not yet released any details for Games days in 2014. This could this spell disaster for this years’ Golden Demon and Armies on parade. After the poor attendance and feedback some people are speculating that Games day may not go ahead in 2014.
Have you or anyone that you know started work on entry for either Golden Demon or Armies if Parade 2014? How will you feel if Games day 2014 doesn’t happen? One thing is certain the editor of Warhammer visions will have a harder job finding content for the magazine, as will we finding content for Chapter Masters.

Black Piranha down

Blcak Piranha downThis Entry from Games day 2013 Golden Deamon  from the open catergory depicts a sole survivor of a downed Tau Piranha being rescued by a mixed squad of Kroot carnivores and some tau Fire warriors,  supported by a very well converted Shadow sun model. The diorama is entitled “Black Piranha down” from what I assume is a play on the film “Black hawk down” I must say though the Piranha doesn’t look very black and I don’t see any Somalians shooting at the Tau. Joking aside though it must have taken some doing to achieve such a nicely converted and painted diorama.
