New Tyranid Codex – Failure will not be tolerated

Tyranids Army Kraken Hive Fleet Kraken Tyranid Army

Have the design studio done it again. The last tyranid codex was an abject failure for most gamers. Frustration at dumbing down existing units, frustration at non availability of models to represent the good units. It took 2 years for the model range to support a balanced build and a further year for 6th edition to bring tyranids back to being competitive; in the hands if the average gamer. Tyranids currently depend on tough monstrous creatures to overwhelm their opposition.

If the current rumours on codex tyranids contents of true, (big points decreases) we will see much more numerous hoards with monsters which are far easier to destroy. This does promise a force which looks much more like fourth edition Tyranid army, but with a lot more monsters and winged creatures.

The battle report in white dwarf appears to indicate that the harpy/hive cron is absolutely critical to having a strong army build. So that’s £80 you will need to spend to keep your tyranids playable. A hive cron and the codex.

I see this release is absolutely critical for 40k range. I wished for years I could have continued to use the old tyranid codex. I won’t be buying this one unless there is a good reaction from the gaming community.
So far it’s not looking promising, but the outcome won’t be clear for a few weeks.

Space marine rumours

There have been lots of rumours about space marines over the last week . I normally stay well a way of rumours on this site. This isn’t because rumours aren’t interesting or profitable for that matter. There are three main sources of rumours on the Internet.

Leaks

Sometimes despite Games workshops best efforts information is a leaked out through their production and distribution chain. Of course these rumours are generally reliable, But often incomplete or slightly inaccurate. Sometimes companies choose to leak information as added publicity for their products. If this was the only source of leaks on the Internet I would happily publish them.

False information

Sometimes information leaks which is totally inaccurate, this is often due to see you early drafts of rules and stats being Leaked. There are also those who deliberately make up rumours to promote there own websites and gain revenue from their sponsors advertising. Then there is the third category which is often referred to in forums, which is those who are wishing all wanting something to be true when they have no reason to know whether or not is.

Where ever the rumours come from people can get very upset about the information that comes out, regardless of if it’s true. For this reason i feel that it’s not worth publishing these “leaks” That’s why chapter masters only ever goes from official release information and leaked photos. So you won’t find any information on chaptermasters.com until it’s official(almost).

Changes coming soon to UK retailers.

Online sales of Games Workshop products are disappearing, slowly.

Wargame Store in the UK explain some of the changes. How long will it be before there is an outright ban of resellers who advertise online?

Rumours: Death from the Skies (flyers expansion in February)

StormEagle

Ben is still on rumour strike. It’s been more than a week since the rumours section has been updated. I don’t think this one can be ignored though. So I’m going to force you to read it. No I am, open your eyes and read! ok I’ll stop writing this dross and get on with it.

Could we really be on the verge of the summer of flyers before the winter is done?

from Kroothawk posted on Faeit

“A new 40k supplement book will be released on 16th February:
“Death from the Skies” (26€, mail order only, chance of being in English only).
More when I know more. But it certainly sounds like a flyer supplement.”

Ben had predicted through patten we would see a Dark Angel campaign book at this point? Death from the skys. You could take that either way, still there are other rumours indicating this if for flyers though.

from DarkWarrior1981 on Warseer

“This is not as exciting as people may think. I saw the advert for the book at a local store; It contains only rules for fliers still on sale or with a codex entry (the Dark Eldar bomber is in), some fliers have their rules updated to 6th edition (whatever this means exactly). The only thing actually new is, that the Stormraven is now available to Codex Space Marines and Black Templars as well. Also you will find the flier rules from Crusade of Fire and new missions. The book will be on sale (no pre-order) from 16th of February, is direct only (so not from your FLGS), english language only and will not be limited stock.”

The shocking news (if true) is that the Strom Raven is going to be available to Codex marines and Black Templers. So it’s only Space Wolves that are forced to look to Forge world for a flyer (Dark Angels if they want a flying transport). Does this indicates the wolves may have something else in development??? or just are not imbracing the new technology in keep with their background. Is the Codex Storm Raven more shocking than the lack of new flyers in this supplement  nar prephaps that does take the carrot. Ok there may be a new Dark Eldar Bomber. So one book for one flyer??? I also wonder what 6th edition updated rules look like, Hull points???

If you are not a Dark Eldar player, you might have stopped reading by now, but don’t discard this as an meaningless release. The one sure good thing about this, is that your not going to need to take what is probably a very tatty looking White Dwarf along to games. I for one also have faith in the boys at the studio to put out a fantastic book full of lovely pictures and warm and fuzzy background.

Jon signing off.
