Post 500 – Be a Better Painter and Gamer

This is it. Post 500. It’s been over 2 years of posts from Jon, Gareth and myself. I could dwell on the successes of Chaptermasters.com but I’m not that inventive. Instead I’d like to share a lesson I’ve learnt from all these blog entries. Life is a participation sport. Readers are looking for news like looking at Space Marines models. Below is a table of the most popular posts on chaptermasters.com You will notice one common trend, the word leak, leak, leak appears in most of them. The very posts GW and our sponsor don’t want us to show, are the ones you wanted to see. Given we can’t post unreleased pictures, this has obviously given us a bit of a problem.

If I was thinking about starting a hobby at the moment I would pick something cheaper than 40k. I’d probably like to give Xwing a go. If I was starting out a blog I would pick something other than 40k. F1 or Bigfoot perhaps.

As I said above life is about participation, so be a better gamer, a be a better painter and I hope your creator blesses you.

I hope we have inspired you over the years. This is by no means the end but a refocusing of our blog towards news and reviews and away from pictures, not that we wont be still posting those.

So I will leave you with the excellent video from our friend Gus who won Silver in the Golden Demon 2013 duel.

Should 40k be more Competitive or More Collectable?

40k Today is it a Mess or is it Just Chaos

There has been a lot of talk about the over complexity of 40k and how Games Workshop focusing on collectables over game play is a bad thing. In fact I signed a petition last week to that effect, however I’m having second thoughts and I want to explain why.

Background Restrictions

For a long time Chaos players have wanted to represent legions in their armies but have felt the codex does not support this. I’m embarking on a Hersey Emporer’s Children army at the moment and naturally want to be able to use my very expensive army in 40k as well as 30k. In fact as I know no other 30k players I expect it will be a case of mostly using it in 40k. I have been contemplating which codex will best support this army. Would Space Wolves make more sense? Heavy weapon squads with more than 4 heavy weapons are possible. Squads larger than 10 men are also possible. However the Chaos Space Marine codex enables me to field 20 man tactical squads, more in keeping with a legion. I’m also happy to except chaos have miss placed a few of their heavy weapons over the years. With the range of choice Games Workshop and Forge World are offering us for army builds at the moment the possibilities are almost endless. So does 40k need an increase in the number of armies possible with legion rules added in the new Chaos Space Marine Codex?

Game Play

The new lost and damed forge world book has got me very excited. This opens up the possibility of using lots of 30k tanks and other vehicles. Quite frankly the thought of 40k being balanced with so many units which can impact each other is just crazy. Transports and fortifications are a big factor for game balance the impact of a fortifications 3++ save on a squad of 10 terminators is totally different to giving a 3++ save to a group of scouts. So what do we expect the studio to do? restrict the use of units, Stop using rules which allow units to effect bonuses on other units and if they did do that where would you draw the line? Remove transports and fortifications from the game? Stop squads being able to use them unless purchases specifically for that unit? There is no simple answer which turns the complex system of 40k into chess. Although that said chess is only balanced because each opponent has the same army. 40k can become balanced quite quickly if you play guard vs guard, more so if you take identical units.

Collectables

What do we want here? The survey I signed talked about shifting focus away from collectable releases. Are we really saying we don’t want limited edition releases? Granted sometimes GW makes questionable decisions on what should be a limited edition. To me a limited editions should be something that will always be desirable. Does anyone really want a limited edition version of 6th edition rule book, now most of us are playing 7th edition? I’m also not that keen on these plastic limited edition models. Don’t get me wrong the quality of the sculpts are fantastic, but in no way are they in the same boat as the metal/finecast models for the level of detail. I want my limited edition model to look like a work of art not something that came out of a plastic mould. All that said, I enjoy all the limited productions GW are putting out. I think they add to the hobby and I don’t see where they are taking away from gameplay.

Direct Only Models

This is the part of the petition I really agreed with. Limiting the range of models available in store does not help the hobby. Direct orders are something I have only ever excepted should be needed to order very specialist parts. Moving entire Armies to direct order can’t be a good thing. The problem here is what else can GW do. We wouldn’t be happy for even more popular units to be removed from store so less popular armies could return and GW would gain very little in doing so.

More Competitive Pricing

Well who doesn’t want cheaper models. Games Workshop that’s who! As a long time veteran of the hobby I can still remember when GW had end of line sales, indeed most of my epic Imperial Guard army was purchased in a sale. Recent pricing would suggest Games Workshop appears to think they are immune to the price elasticity curb. This is the rule that as prices go up number of sales goes down.
IMG_0509.PNG
Some markets e.g. fine art does not suffer form loss of sales when prices are increased. This is due to the market they appeal to; rich collectors. The last time I checked I wasn’t rich at least not in terms of the country in which I live, I acknowledge it’s one of the riches companies in the world. However within this country I’m very much middle class, my disposable income has remained largely unchanged in recent years, in real terms it has decreased. Games Workshop’s prices for their new models appears to have ruffly doubled in the last 5 years. Average release prices have gone from £20 something to £40 something. The last 3 years of financial results appear to Indicate they are very much not immune to price elasticity and increasing prices has not helped their profits. Going through my Games Workshop purchase history I know I am spending far less on new models. Seeking alternative sources such as swaps with friends or buying from auction sites with all their pitfalls, no delivery, recasts and damaged models. I don’t blame GW for trying to put up their prices, but making if more expensive to start out is not good marketing, in my own view 6th edition could have been left in play for at least another year. Asking player to cough up another £50 for a slightly revised rule book less than 2 years after the previous, is not going to make you popular, if anything it says you are desperate and puts people off buying the latest rule book . So in short I think more competitive prices would be good for the hobby, good for Games Workshop and good for existing players.

Golden Demon 2014 at Warhammer Fest – Ben’s coolest Demons

These are Bens Pick for his favourite entires at Golden Demon. Rather than looking at painting quality Ben has been looking purely at the colour scheme and overall look. He did only had my pictures to go on, so sorry if I didn’t take a picture of your model; and after all Ben’s opinion won’t get you into White Dwarf.

If you are wondering about the Red and Green stickers on the entry cards. The Green Sticker denote an entry which is being considered as a finalist and goes through to the next round. The red sticker is an entry which has been photographed and may therefore appear in Warhammer Visions, White Dwarf or on the Games Workshop website in White Dwarf daily.

While the number of entries was lower this year the quality was possible even higher.

I’ve seen some very negative feedback on other sites about Warahammer Fest and while the Games Workshop studio was totally out done by Forgeworld, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole event.
As Golden Demon isn’t running on the Saturday, Games Workshop management need to give some more thought to what takes pace in it’s void; If they run the same formate next year and expect people to attend both days, while I would have been happy to have a reason to do. It was also very disappointing the Studio didn’t bring along a couple of display boards from their impressive collection and a few more of their senior staff.
But those were the only down points and really not that big a deal. The venue was better, the space given to none sale activities was bigger, the lighting at Golden Demon was better, the parking was better, more content was provided. All in all it was a great day out and I can’t wait for next year to roll around.

Warhammer Fest – No More Epic – New Tyranids – Visions to Continue

It was a smaller affair this year. So it will be a smaller write up. I’m skipping over Forgeworld’s news. Enough people have covered it already. I attended on Sunday along with around 1700 other people. Saturday was 1100 attendees. Jervis Johnson and Jes Goodwin didn’t show up. Only one Golden Demon this year and they didn’t make it. I think Jes may have been there on Saturday. John Blance and Alt Morrison formed the only Vanguard present with Phill Kelly representing the design team.

Fist off I must admit I forgot to take a memory card for my camera, so had to use my phone for the pictures: and thus my phone went flat very quickly. As a result I spoke to most of the studio members without the notes I’d spent the last few weeks composing.

The Studio

I spent only a few minutes taking to Phil Kelly. We discussed strong holds and the current weakness of the Tyranid. He clearly wanted to tell me something about how this would be addressed but couldn’t, there is something coming for the bugs, perhaps the rumoured big bugs. Officially Phil Said nothing but i am certain something is on the way for the Nids. I could see it in his eyes. As certain as I was about the new Space Marine tactical squad. Which turned out to be true.

White Dwarf

Wahammer Fest
I spoke with Jes about the far to brief battle reports they now do in White Dwarf. Jes was very forthcoming. He said he was going to try to do some bigger battle reports by reducing other contents occasionally.

Epic Release Coming

IMG_1138.JPG
Jes Brickham categorically stated their was an epic release coming and that I could quote him on it. He wanted to give more space to that battle report. I was very pleased to hear this as an “Epic” player. This is not rumour, this is fact. Jes has revealed there will be an “epic release” in the next few months;) After realising what he had said (accidentally implied Epic was getting redone) He quickly clarified what he meant an check’d I wasn’t going to post this information on the Internet. Which of course I assured him I wouldn’t do. Edit: This is because GW are not redoing “Epic” there are planing another epic product release like a titan knight or a Thunderhawk, or a new game. This proves the rumours about a new Epic box set posted via other sites are completely false.
How much more digging do I need to do before we accept Epic is not returning?

Warhammer Visions

rp_white-dwarf-cover.jpg
Jes Brickham also categorically stated Warhammer Visions was not going to be canceled, if anything it’s future is more secure than White Dwarfs, which isn’t in question either. He’d like to make White Dwarf bigger but hasn’t got enough people to do so. I said I’d be happy to pay a bit more for White Dwarf if their was more content. Did I really say that?

The Model Team

I spoke with Ali Morision about the future of Finecast/Metal traditional sculpting. He was very clear he could see no possibility of metal returning, although there might be a few more Finecast releases. I talked to him about the human art like quality of the old methods. His reply was that was what Forgeworld had taken on and that the Games Workshop Studio is now very much about plastic. I asked him how it was possible for them to make any money on the Limited Edition Plastic models. He said they made plenty of money off them, by the fist day of the release.
I also spoke to him about the possibility of new sisters of battle models. He said it wasn’t likely as there were not enough players collecting them. I pointed out this used to be true of Dark Eldar until they redid the range.

I did speak with Anya from heavy metal, but her comments were for my ears only. This time around. Oh ok she told me to make my highlights thinner, my painting, not my hair.

Clarification

It seems I’ve caused a bit of an upset on a couple of sites. There is no plan to release a new Epic Box set, nor did I say there was. Jes Brickham did say there is going to be an “epic release” in the next few months, not an “Epic box set” released. I don’t know what this epic release will be. I’m sorry that wasn’t clear from what I wrote about his response to my statement at being pleased to hear of a New Epic release. I have amended the text in the original post to make this clearer. There have been rumours of a new Epic box set. Jes has strongly indicated there will not be one, along with denying the rumoured end to Warhammer Visions. So to put and end to all this Epic wish listing, I’ve got the correct information from someone at Games Workshop.

In unrelated news @JervisJohnson has tweeted he is doing epic play testing at the moment.

And on that epic bomb shell I will leave you, for now. We still have a ton of pictures to post so there is lots still to come.

Large Army Case KR480 Review

The Big KR Case IMG_1947.JPG

Today I received my upgraded KR multicase. My Ultramarines have recently exceeded the combined 320 model capacity of a single KR and GW case. The balancing act between the car and Warhammer World have also got a bit tide. I’ve seen far to many models hit the deck and smash into too many pieces this way.

I opted for the KR480 which has 12 4×10 trays with compartments on a similar size to a games workshop case. While I love the increased capacity of the higher density KR trays, Terminators will not fit and jump packed and banned models are not well suited.

I must say I’m as delighted with this case as my 1st KR box. While the case does not have the same quality and durability as the GW and battle foam cases, the model transport capacity is higher than GW cases and the cost is much lower than the battle foam equivalent. The trays are a bit shallower than GW cases so terminator 40mm bases stick out a bit far. However with the amount of spare trays it’s possible to inverse one tray to provide more space for the 40mm bases. The other thing I’m very happy about with this case is the interchangeability with my other KR cases. This has meant I can up the capacity of the case to 500 by simply swapping 2 trays with my KR200 it also means I put Terminator holding tray it the KR200 case which holds my Space Wolves.

I’ll sign off with a picture of my Ultramarine collection which totals over well over 300 Space Marines including Terminators, stored in just 9 of the 12 trays in the KR480 case.
